Area light source10used for LCD device1includes light guide12and LED devices18and19disposed at a side portion of light guide12. A light receiving portion at a side edge portion of light guide12is provided with prisms24and25of saw-tooth prism group22. Apex angles of prisms24and25are set to be more acute up to the middle point of prisms24and25as prisms24and25are farther from LED devices18and19, respectively.
