ABSTRACT:
An aqueous amphoteric polyurethane emulsion is prepared by reacting an isocyanate-terminated urethane prepolymer with an excess of a polyalkylene polyamine to form a polyurethane-urea-polyamine; reacting a portion of the free amino groups contained in the resulting product with a blocked polyisocyanate having one free isocyanate group; rendering the remaining amino groups contained in the resulting product amphoteric either (I) by reacting said amino groups with a compound selected from the group consisting of 1,3-propane sultone, 1,4-butane sultone, .beta.-propiolactone, .gamma.-butyrolactone, .epsilon.-caprolactone, .delta.-valerolactone and a monohalogenated sodium carboxylate having the formula
