ABSTRACT:
An apparatus comprises an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device and a gas generating composition. The gas generating composition comprises an oxidizer, a fuel component and preferably a binder. A preferred oxidizer is ammonium nitrate. The fuel component is a dinitramide salt having the molecular formula X.sup.+ [N(NO.sub.2).sub.2 ].sub.n.sup.- wherein n is equal to one or more and X.sup.+ is the cationic derivative of an organic compound having one or more tetravalent nitrogen atoms. A preferred salt is guanidinium dinitramide.
