ABSTRACT:
A method for filtering a suspension including particulates and increasing the concentration of retainable matter wherein the suspension is drawn through the filter in a manner such that a portion of the suspension is subjected to a negative pressure which pulls it away from the filter membrane and permits it to pass through the filter unit without going through the membrane and a portion of the suspension is subjected to a positive pressure which causes it to pass through the filter membrane before exiting the filter unit, thereby creating a permeate. The invention involves regulation of flow rates to achieve a ratio of the pressures so that when some of the particulate matter from the portion of the suspension passing through the filter membrane becomes effective in decreasing flux, the negative pressure will serve to pull the particulate free and unclog the filter membrane on a continuous and automatic basis, thus allowing prolong filtration time with maximal flux.
