ABSTRACT:
An amplifier arrangement include a control circuit having an audio input and a control input, the control circuit producing an error signal proportional to the difference between the audio input and the control input; a comparator receiving the error signal as an input and having a first reference signal as an input and producing a comparator output signal comprising a gain control signal for an amplifier circuit; an amplifier circuit having the audio signal as an input and further having a gain responsive to the comparator output signal, the amplifier circuit having an output; a pulse width modulator circuit having the amplifier circuit output as an input, the pulse width modulator circuit converting an amplified audio signal comprising the output of the amplifier circuit into a pulse width modulated signal whose duty cycle represents audio information in the audio signal; a power amplifier switching circuit receiving the pulse width modulated output signal, the output of the power amplifier switching circuit comprising an amplified pulse width modulated signal; and an output filter receiving the amplified pulse width modulated signal, the output filter converting the amplified pulse width modulated signal into an amplified audio signal substantially reproducing said input audio signal but at an increased gain and adapted to be coupled to an output transducer. Preferably, the amplifier circuit is a voltage controlled amplifier (VCA) whose gain element is an output circuit of an optocoupler, e.g., an FET of an output side of an optocoupler wherein the FET impedance is controlled to control the VCA gain.
