ABSTRACT:
Ampholytic quaternary ammonium compounds according to the formula: ##STR1## where R, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each is an alkyl group containing a carbon chain of from 1 to 22 carbon atoms, R.sub.3 is H, CH.sub.3 or CH.sub.3 CH.sub.2, R.sub.4 is H or CH.sub.3, and X is COOH, CN, CHO, or COOCH.sub.3 and methods for preparing such compounds wherein a tertiary amine is reacted with an .alpha.,.beta. unsaturated compound to produce an intermediate reaction product and this intermediate reaction product is reacted with an alkylene oxide to produce the ampholytic quaternary ammonium compound.
