Amidine phosphonates carrying an unsaturated nitrogen heterocycle-containing substituent, representative of which are N-methyl-N'-[2-(2-thiazolylmethylthio)ethyl]amidinophosphonic acid monoethyl ester and N'-methyl-N"-[2-((5-methyl-4-imidazolyl)methylthio)ethyl]guanidinophosphon ic acid monobenzyl ester, are histamine H.sub.2 -antagonists.
