Substituted and unsubstituted .alpha.-t-butyl-p-xylene-.alpha.,.alpha.'-diols, e.g., .alpha.-t-butyl-p-xylene-.alpha.,.alpha.'-diol, are prepared from the corresponding 4-pivaloyl-benzyl alcohols and are useful as hypolipidemic agents.
