Alpha-aminoethylene phosphonate betaines of the formula ##STR1## R.sup.1 is hydrogen or methyl; X is ##STR2## or CH.sub.2 ; a is 0, 1, 2, or 3, with the condition that when X is ##STR3## that a be greater than 1; R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, aryl, benzyl, or cyclohexyl;
