This invention is directed to the production of glasses exhibiting transition temperatures below 375.degree. C., preferably below 350.degree. C., and superior resistance to attack by boiling water. The glasses contain at least 10% copper, as expressed in terms of CuO, the predominant proportion of the copper being present in the Cu.sup.+2 oxidation state.
