ABSTRACT:
An airborne absolute microwave refractometer for obtaining an instantaneous nd continuous index of refraction of the atmosphere through which an aircraft bearing the refractometer is flying. A sampling cavity is mounted on an aircraft and is open to the outside atmosphere. A harmonic of a low frequency sweep oscillator is phase locked to the microwave sampling cavity and measurement of the average oscillator frequency by a binary counter arrangement provides a direct measurement of refractivity.
