ABSTRACT:
A system and method for purifying air by employing a lamp that produces two separate energy intensity maxima. The lamp preferably emits ozone-producing radiation that falls within one wavelength interval, and germicidal radiation that falls within another wavelength interval. The air purifier of the invention includes a housing having an irradiation chamber, an air inlet for introducing air into the irradiation chamber, and a radiation source disposed within the irradiation chamber. The air purifier further includes an air outlet also formed in the housing for discharging the air to an external environment. The method includes providing a housing having an air inlet and an irradiation chamber, and providing a lamp within the chamber wherein the lamp has a relative maximum lamp output within two discrete wavelength intervals. The air is introduced into the irradiation chamber through the air inlet, and the air is irradiated within the chamber. The irradiated air is then discharged from the housing to the external environment. The invention further provides for the utilization of a gas detector to actuate selectively the air purifier of the invention in response to the presence of a selected gas in the air.
