An air conditioning system for automotive vehicles equipped with a control device capable of controlling to different values a setting temperature above which a compressor should operate or a discharge capacity of same in response to an operating position of the blower manually set by a manually operable airflow rate setting switch. Further, the control device is capable of controlling the setting temperature or the discharge capacity in response also to load conditions of the engine of the vehicle. Furthermore, if the blower is in a high rate operating position, the setting temperature or the discharge capacity is controlled to such a value that enables the compressor to achieve sufficient cooling capacity, regardless of the position of the economy switch.
