ABSTRACT:
Compounds of formula (I): ##STR1## (wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or an acetyl group), which we have named "the adenophostins", and, have the ability to increase intracellular calcium ion concentrations by acting on the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP.sub.3) receptors which exist in the endoplasmic reticulum. The adenophostins are useful as hypertensive agents. They can be prepared by cultivation of a microorganism of the genus Penicillium, e.g. Penicillium brevicompactum SANK 11991 (FERM BP-3499) or Penicillium brevicompactum SANK 12177 (FERM BP-3500).
