A compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.2 is hydrogen or lower alkyl, R.sup.3 is carboxy or a protected carboxy group, X is --S-- or ##STR2## and the dotted line bridging the 2- to 4-positions of the formula indicates that the compound may be the 2- or 3-cephem derivative, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
