ABSTRACT:
The invention relates to substituted phenylbarbituric acids of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.3, independently, are lower-alkoxy or lower-alkylthio; R.sup.2 is lower-alkoxy, hydroxy or amino; and R.sup.4 is hydrogen; or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are lower-alkoxy, R.sup.3 is hydrogen and R.sup.4 is lower-alkyl,
which are prepared from correspondingly substituted benzene derivatives and alloxan. The compounds of formula I can be converted into substituted benzaldehydes which in turn are known intermediates in the preparation of pharmaceutically valuable benzylpyrimidines.
