ABSTRACT:
4'-alkoxy-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine derivatives of formula (I) and metal complexes thereof of formula (II). ##STR1## where R.sup.1 represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, wherein the substituent is a member selected from the group consisting of an aryl group, a heterocyclic group bonded to the alkyl group via the carbon atom thereof, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, an alkylthio group and an arylthio group; Py and Py' each represent a substituted or unsubstituted 2-pyridyl group.
