3,4,5-trifluorophenyl 4-cyclobenzoates of formula I ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 is an alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 18 carbon atoms which may be substituted, and
L.sup.1 is H or F.
Liquid-crystalline media comprising such 3,4,5-trifluorophenyl 4-cyclohexylbenzoates, and electro-optical displays containing a liquid-crystalline medium of this type.
