2-Substituted para-aminophenols of general formula: ##STR1## where Y denotes oxygen or sulphur and R denotes a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 hydroxyalkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 haloalkyl or a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 polyhydroxyalkyl, provided that when Y=O, R is not methyl or ethyl and when Y=S, R is not ethyl; and
