ABSTRACT:
A composition and method for inhibiting the growth of plants, mono- and dicotyledonous plants such as soya, tobacco cereal grass, ornamental plants are disclosed. The active priciple is benzoic acids and esters corresponding to formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, nitro, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylcarbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylamino, di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl, furyl, tetrahydrofuryl, phenyl that may be substituted by halogen or methyl; C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkenyl; C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 halogenoalkenyl; C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkinyl; C.sub.3 -C.sub.20 cycloalkyl; phenyl, unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy; C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylthio; C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 halogenoalkyl, cyano or nitro;
