ABSTRACT:
Processes and compositions are described for the use in perfume and perfumed article aroma augmenting, enhancing and imparting compositions and as perfume and perfumed article aroma imparting materials of 1-butanoyl-3,3-dimethylcyclohexane having the formula: ##STR1## produced according to the following process: Reacting 1-acetyl-3,3-dimethylcyclohexane with acetaldehyde in the presence of an inorganic base or a mixture of boron oxide and boric acid thereby forming one or more 1-butenoyl-3,3-dimethylcyclohexanes represented by the structure: ##STR2## (wherein one of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon double bond and the other of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon single bond) and reacting this compound with a reducing agent such as hydrogen in order to form a saturated ketone having the structure: ##STR3## Addition of the 1-butanoyl-3,3-dimethylcyclohexane (also referred to herein as 1-(3,3-dimethylcyclohexyl)-butan-1-one) to perfumes, colognes and perfumed articles produces fruity, berry and herbaceous aromas with green and tobacco nuances.
