Magnesidin, which comprises a mixture of the compounds of the general formula I ##SPC1##
in which n is the integer 4 or 6, the magnesium-free form of Magnesidin, and the salts thereof with mono-or polyvalent cations, and a process for the preparation of Magnesidin which comprises cultivating pseudomonas magnesiorubra HPL No. Z-1190 (ATCC 21.856).
