ABSTRACT:
By driving a semiconductor laser with a current pulse having an optimized shape, the relaxation oscillations of the laser are greatly suppressed. This leads to significantly reduced frequency chirping and improved side mode suppression. The pulse broadening normally produced by 100 km of single-mode fiber can be completely compensated by driving the laser with the optimized current pulse. This invention can be applied to any type of single frequency laser including DFB, C.sup.3, and the like.
