ABSTRACT:
A pair of data transducers are gimbaled on the distal ends of resilient carrier beams for writing and reading data on the opposite major surfaces of a hard data storage disk. The carrier beams bias the transducers into contact with predefined landing zones on the disk surfaces when the disk is at rest. Sliding over the disk surfaces when the disk is set into rotation, the transducers start flying on an air cushion generated by disk rotation as the disk picks up speed. In order to reduce the load forces exerted by the transducers on the disk during the starting period of the disk drive motor, a pair of transducer lift arms are disposed between the disk and the respective transducer carrier beams. Being of bimorph cell construction, the transducer lift arms bend away from the disk surfaces in response to an applied voltage, thereby lifting the transducer carrier beams to an extent necessary to lessen the load forces.
