ABSTRACT:
A process for preparing 2,4-dichloro-5-dichloromethyl-thiazole of the formula ##STR1## which comprises reacting 2,4-dichloro-5-thiazole-carboxaldehyde of the formula ##STR2## with thionyl chloride (SOCl.sub.2) in the presence of a halogenating catalyst at a temperature between 0.degree. C. and 100.degree. C. Preferred catalysts are aprotic organic nitrogen or phosphorus compounds. The products are directly obtained in high yield and purity so they can be directly used as bactericides or as intermediates for herbicides.
