ABSTRACT:
A method is disclosed for inhibiting corrosion of a ferrous based metal in contact with an aqueous system comprising incorporating into the aqueous system an effective amount of a substituted carboxymethoxysuccinic acid selected from the group consisting of compounds having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is --(CHOH).sub.n CH.sub.2 OH, --(CHOH).sub.m CO.sub.2 H or --(CHOH).sub.r (CHOR')CO.sub.2 H and R' is CH(CO.sub.2 H)CH.sub.2 CO.sub.2 H; n is 1,2,3 or 4; m is 1,2,3, or 4; r is 1,2, or 3; and water soluble salts thereof.
