ABSTRACT:
A method of desulfurization of flue gas involves the use of two recirculating water systems separated by a secondary cooling stage. In the first system, partial cooling and removal of some particulates and SO.sub.3 is effected by direct contact of the gas and water, followed by the secondary cooling which further removes particulates and SO.sub.3 in the condensate. In the second recirculating water system, SO.sub.2 is first absorbed under atmospheric conditions and is then desorbed under vacuum conditions to effect refrigeration of the recirculating water. The refrigerating effect is balanced against the contact and secondary cooling of the gas to stabilize the temperature at which absorption takes place such that a selected percentage of SO.sub.2 is removed from the gas.
