ABSTRACT:
A starter for an internal combustion engine is disclosed which comprises a motor, an output shaft operatively coupled to the armature shaft of the motor, and an axially slidable assembly splined to the output shaft and including an overrunning clutch and a hollow shaft having a pinion formed at the front end thereof. At least a portion of the pinion, the teeth of which have a top surface of substantial circumferential width, is, when the hollow shaft is at the extreme rear position, received into and supported by an annular ball bearing which is mounted to the front frame to rotatably and axially slidably support the hollow shaft.
