ABSTRACT:
A process for the preparation of an organomercaptophenol is described which comprises the reaction of sulfur with a 2,6-disubstituted phenol carried out in the presence of (1) a base, (2) an activated olefin or an epoxy compound, (3) and a solvent with a high dielectric constant. The organomercaptophenols produced by this process are useful as monomers in the synthesis of esters, carbonates, ethers, epoxy compounds, among many other chemicals synthesized from monohydric phenols. In addition, the organomercaptophenols are also useful as antioxidants.
