ABSTRACT:
Polysulfide silanes: (RO).sub.3 SiC.sub.3 H.sub.6 S.sub.x C.sub.3 H.sub.6 Si(OR).sub.3 are reacted with an anhydrous sulfur compound: M.sup.1.sub.2 S or M.sup.2 S and a halogenoalkoxysilane: XC.sub.3 H.sub.6 Si(OR).sub.3 to form polysulfide silanes: (RO).sub.3 SiC.sub.3 H.sub.6 S.sub.y C.sub.3 H.sub.6 Si(OR).sub.3 wherein R is methyl or ethyl, x is a positive number of 3 to 6 on the average, M.sup.1 is an alkali metal or ammonium, M.sup.2 is an alkaline earth metal or zinc, X is a halogen, and y is a positive number less than x on the average. Short chain polysulfide silanes can be prepared with the industrial advantages of safety, high yields and low cost.
