ABSTRACT:
A process for forming ionomer resins neutralized with aluminum is disclosed. In the process a copolymer containing carboxylic acid groups is melt blended in the absence of water with an aluminum compound of the formula ##STR1## where m is 0-2, n is 1-3 and the mixture treated with a volatile organic acid such as glacial acetic acid to activate the reaction between the acid groups of the copolymer and the aluminum compound. The organic acid is then removed from the copolymer by vaporization. Optionally, a moisture scavenger such as acetic anhydride is used to remove water which is incidentally present or formed by the reaction of the aluminum compound.
