ABSTRACT:
A process for the preparation of secondary and tertiary amines such as dimethylcyclohexylamine, comprising reacting an amine of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is an organic group and R.sub.2 is an organic group or hydrogen atom, with a ketone such as cyclohexanone in the liquid phase in the presence of an unsupported metallic copper catalyst under hydrogenating conditions. The process further includes providing an acid such as acetic acid as a condensation promoter, permitting the metallic copper catalyst to separate out by gravitation over a period of time, removing post-reaction material from contact with the catalyst, separating the post-reaction material into fractions, as by distillation, and recycling unreacted starting material for further reaction.
