A process for the preparation of 2,5-dihydrofurans of the general formula I ##STR1## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are identical or different and are hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, by the catalytic rearrangement of 3,4-epoxy-1-butenes of the general formula II ##STR2## comprises the rearrangement being catalyzed by a system which contains components A, B and C, at from 60.degree. to 200.degree.
