ABSTRACT:
An optical function element constructed with a substrate, an optical waveguide formed by an ion-exchange process on the surface of the substrate, except for one region thereof, and an element to effect either modulation or deflection of light propagating in the optical waveguide. The modulating or deflecting element is provided at a region on the surface of the substrate where no ion-exchange process has been effected, and functions to vary the refractive index of the optical waveguide by external action. Also disclosed is a method for fabricating such optical function element, wherein a mask is formed on one region of the surface of a substrate made of either lithium niobate crystal or lithium tantalate crystal, then an ion-exchange process is effected on the surface of the substrate with the mask formed thereon to inject protons into the substrate at a region where no mask is formed, and finally electrodes are formed on the region of the substrate covered with the mask.
