An apparatus including a one-field delay circuit21for delaying a luminance signal F0of a video signal under judgment by an amount of one field; a subtractor circuit22for generating a difference signal FD0indicating the difference between a luminance signal F1and the luminance signal F0for each field; an adder circuit23; a one-field delay circuit24; a one-field delay circuit25for delaying the difference signal FD0by an amount of one field; and a comparison circuit26and a judgment circuit27for comparing the difference signals FD0and FD1and deciding if the luminance signal FD0is a film video signal based on the result of the comparison.
