ABSTRACT:
In order to address the problem of allowing a GGSN16of a UMTS core network to work towards multiple Policy Control Functions (PCFs)17co-located with P-CSCF nodes18using the COPS protocol, a policy control function coordinator (PCF-C)15is implemented between the GGSN16and the P-CSCF18.A single COPS connection is established between the GGSN16and the PCF-C15, whilst a COPS connection is established between the PCF-C15and each of the P-CSCF nodes18. Decisions made at the PCFs17are routed to the GGSN16via the PCF-C17, and responses generated at the GGSN16are routed to the appropriate PCFs17via the GGSN17. This architecture avoids conflicts which might otherwise arise with the COPS protocol.
