A liquid crystal display element has a liquid crystal layer made of cholesteric liquid crystal and a circularly polarizing plate for circularly polarizing light. The liquid crystal layer has the following relation:in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?d/p>1.5in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?where d is a thickness of the liquid crystal layer and p is a helical pitch of the cholesteric liquid crystal.
