A phosphor for vacuum ultraviolet ray-excited light-emitting elements which comprises a compound represented by the following formula (I):in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?M11−a−b−c−dM2aM3bM41−eM511−fM6c−d+e+fO19−(b+c+f)/2  (I)in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?(wherein M1is at least one element selected from the group consisting of La, Y and Gd, M2is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ce and Tb, M3is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ca, Sr and Ba, M4is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mg and Zn, M5is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Al and Ga, and M6is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mn and Eu, and a, b, c, d, e and f are numbers satisfying the conditions of 0≦a<1, 0≦b≦0.6, 0≦c≦0.5, 0≦d≦0.5, 0≦e<1, 0≦f<1, a+b+c+d<1 and 0<c+d+e+f), respectively.
