A safety cable cartridge20is connected between a towing vehicle12having a hitch ball and a trailer10including a tubular coupler housing16mounted to a trailer draw bar. The cartridge is self contained and includes a cartridge housing28for positioning in the elongated opening of the coupler housing, at least one safety cable assembly30positioned in said cartridge housing, and spring20surrounds the cable31and biases the distal end30of the cable toward the cartridge housing.
