ABSTRACT:
The present invention provides novel benzothiophene compounds of formula I ##STR1## wherein R is --H, --OH, --O(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl), --O--CO--(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl), --O--CO--Ar in which Ar is optionally substituted phenyl, or --O--SO.sub.2 --(C.sub.4 -C.sub.6 alkyl);
