ABSTRACT:
A hydrophilic resin is produced by a method which comprises copolymerizing a hydrophilic unsaturated monomer with 0.001 to 50 mol %, based on the amount of said monomer, of a first cross-linking agent possessing a structural unit represented by the general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein n represents an integer of at least 1, and then heat-treating the product of the copolymerization. An absorbent resin is produced by a method which comprises treating the hydrophilic resin obtained as described above, in the surface region of the resin, in the presence of a third cross-linking agent capable of reacting with the functional group of the hydrophilic resin.
The absorbent ratio of the absorbent resin with respect to physiological saline solution is able to be increased to at least 20 g/g as compared to its original level by being heat-treated at a temperature of 150.degree. C. for 30 minutes.
