N-chloroformyl carbamic acid amides and esters having the functional group ##EQU1## are prepared by reacting phosgene with an imino compound having the functional group ##EQU2## and free of interfering radicals. Preferably the starting material has the formula ##EQU3## in which R.sup.1 is a monovalent or divalent optionally substituted aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic radical,
