ABSTRACT:
An improved process for the treatment of pellets of a partially crystalline polymer to aid in the removal of volatile impurities from the polymer pellets is disclosed. The improvement comprises the step of contacting the polymer with water at a temperature at least as high as the boiling point of the solvent used in the polymerization process, the temperature being between the boiling point and the temperature at which the pellets of polymer agglomerate. In preferred embodiments the polymer is an ethylene polymer, e.g., an ethylene homopolymer or copolymer of ethylene and a higher .alpha.-olefin (e.g. butene-1), and the process is conducted as a continuous process at temperatures between 115.degree. and 125.degree.C.
