ABSTRACT:
An electronic blood pressure meter in which average pulse wave ratio values are computed from pulse wave data as a ratio of a difference between an average pulse wave level and a minimum pulse wave level to a difference between a maximum pulse wave level and the minimum pulse wave level, and the average pulse wave ratio values are used for evaluating a relationship between said cuff pressure and said pulse wave data. By detecting an interval of a relatively sharp and monotonical increase in the average pulse wave ratio as the cuff pressure is gradually decreased, a systolic blood pressure value and a diastolic blood pressure value are determined as the cuff pressures at the beginning and end of this interval, respectively. As these critical points can be detected with relatively little ambiguity and are not much affected by individual differences, an accurate and reliable blood pressure measurement is made possible. Also, by making use of the average pulse wave ratio, insufficiency in the initial pressurization of the cuff can be detected at a very early stage of blood pressure measurement.
