ABSTRACT:
Process for the preparation of vinylphosphonic acid, by heating a 2-acetoxyethanephosphonic acid dialkyl ester of the general formula ##STR1## wherein R denotes an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, in the presence of acid or basic catalysts at 150.degree. to 270.degree. C. with elimination of an alkyl acetate, and thereafter hydrolyzing the remaining reaction mixture with water at temperatures between 150.degree. and 230.degree. C. while simultaneously distilling off the alcohol formed.
