ABSTRACT:
Etherified 3-hydroxyvalerates of the formula I ##STR1## where R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are identical or different and are each alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl of 5 to 7 carbon atoms, aralkyl of 7 to 10 carbon atoms or aryl of 6 to 10 carbon atoms, are prepared by a process in which a 3-pentenoate of the formula II ##STR2## where R.sub.1 has the above meanings, is reacted with a compound of the formula III
