ABSTRACT:
A continuous method is provided for making an N-alkylphthalimide, such as N-methylphthalimide, by effecting reaction between an alkylamine and phthalic anhydride at a temperature of at least 150.degree. C, while providing for the removal of water of reaction. The N-alkylphthalimides are valuable precursors for making nitrophthalimide, organic dianhydrides and organic polymers.
