ABSTRACT:
A stable vinyl polymer-polyol-alkali metal silicate emulsion is produced by mixing an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate or alkali metal metasilicate pentahydrate, a liquid polyol, a vinyl monomer, peroxide initiator, and a small amount of an acid while heating the mixture up to a temperature below the boiling temperature of the vinyl monomer and agitating until the mixture emulsifies. This emulsion may be reacted with polyisocyanate to produce a vinyl polymer-polyurethane silicate foam which may be used for thermal insulation.
