ABSTRACT:
In a method for voice transmission via radio interface in a digital radio communication system, at least one signal is transmitted between a mobile station and a base station. At least one characteristic value with respect to the transmission conditions of the radio interface is identified from the signal. The characteristic value or values are compared to a threshold and a voice encoder is selected according to the comparison result, with a voice encoder having a higher data rate being employed given good transmission conditions and a voice encoder having a lower data rate given poor transmission conditions. A base station system operating according to the method is also disclosed.
