A process for the oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide with sulfur dioxide and water which comprises combining the carbon monoxide with a predetermined amount of sulfur dioxide and water to produce hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide; and passing the resulting mixture over a ceramic catalyst of the following empirical formula above about 200.degree. C.:
